Stomach is part of the digestive system. It is located in the upper abdomen, between the esophagus and the small intestine. Stomach Cancer also called gastric cancer. 85% cases of stomach cancer cases are adenocarcinomas that occur in the lining of the stomach. Approximately 40 percent of cases develop in the lower part of the stomach; 40 percent develop in the middle part; and 15 percent develop in the upper part. In about 10 percent cases, cancer develops in more than one part of the stomach.

Causes of Stomach Cancer
The causes of stomach cancer is unknown. Age and gender are risk factors and the disease is more common in men over the age of 55.
A diet high in salt and nitrates and low in vitamins A and C increases the risk for stomach cancer. Other dietary risk factors includes food preparation (e.g preserving food by smoking, salt-curing, pickling, or drying) and environment (e.g., lack of refrigeration, poor drinking water). Medical conditions that increase the risk of stomach cancer include pernicious anemia, chronic inflammation of the stomach, and intestinal polyps.
Genetic (hereditary) risk factors include hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC) syndrome and Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and a family history of gastrointestinal cancer. People with type A blood also have an increased risk for stomach cancer.
How is it Treated?
Chemotherapy : Chemotherapy involves using drugs to destroy cancer cells.Drugs may be administered orally or through an IV (ie., through a vein) and treatment often is administered on outpatient basis. .
Radiation Therapy: Radiation involves using high-energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells. This treatment may be used after surgery for gastric cancer to destroy remaining cancer cells.
Surgical Treatment: Treatment for stomach cancer depends on several factors, including the size, location, and extent of the tumor; the stage of the disease; and the patient's age and overall health.
